TRANSCEND-T2D-3

is a clinical research study for people with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease being treated with basal insulin. The study will test if an investigational medicine (the medicine being studied) can help with blood glucose (sugar) and weight management.

Am I qualified to join this research study?

You do not need to have health insurance to take part in the TRANSCEND-T2D-3 study.

Yes, you may be able to join the research study if you:

  • Are aged 18 years or older
  • Have type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease
  • Have been treating your diabetes for at least 3 months with basal insulin alone, or basal insulin with
    • metformin,
    • or SGLT2 inhibitors,
    • or metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors
  • Have a BMI of 23 or more
  • Have HbA1c levels of 7.0% to 10.5%

BMI stands for body mass index. It is a number that compares a person's weight to their height. It can be used to tell if a person may be at risk of some health conditions.

HbA1c is a blood test that measures your blood glucose levels over the past few months. If you do not know what your HbA1c is, the study team can check it for you.

What is a clinical research study?

A clinical research study is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about investigational medicines, such as:

  • Is it safe?
  • Does it work?
  • Are there side effects?

All medicines must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved for doctors to give to patients. Without people taking part in these studies, we would not have new medicines.

The medicine that participants take in a clinical research study is called the study medicine. Different clinical research studies might have different types of study medicines.

Study medicine can be investigational medicine or placebo. Investigational medicine means it is still being tested in clinical research studies. A placebo looks the same as the investigational medicine but does not have any real medicine in it.

You do not need to have health insurance to take part in the TRANSCEND-T2D-3 study.

What does the TRANSCEND-T2D-3 study involve?

You do not need to have health insurance to take part in the TRANSCEND-T2D-3 study.

If you decide to take part in the TRANSCEND-T2D-3 study, you will be randomly assigned (that is by chance) to get either the investigational medicine or placebo. You will give yourself an injection once a week using a prefilled pen. Each participant will also take insulin glargine during the study. You will give yourself an injection of insulin glargine once a day during the study.

The study team will train you on how to give the injections. You will get support at the study site when you need it. During the study you will attend visits with doctors and researchers either in-person at a clinic, by video call, or by phone.

Study Treatment Period
